Just returned to Texas after a quick trip to Florida – and boy am I glad to be back. I never want to move to Florida – couldn’t take the cold! We brought back a couple of coconuts as a souvenir.

It’s been a frigid couple of weeks in Houston too, so I immediately went to check on the two pots of spider lilies with amaryllis that I had left for my wonderful host family. I was curious to see how the amaryllis fared in the unusually cold temps. The bulbs were a little bit soft on the top two layers but I think they will be ok.

The spider lily did just fine – it’s more suited than the amaryllis for cold temperatures. This particular bulb just went through the coldest freeze that Texas has seen for ages, but the foliage is still green and hearty!

The spider lily puts up foliage in the wintertime, blooms in the fall and fades in mid-April, making it a perfect combination when planted with the amaryllis, which starts to grow and put out blooms in the spring and summer, just as the spider lily fades. Spider lily and amaryllis are great bulbs for any season – not just for their blooms, but also for their lovely foliage.

Don’t forget our trip to Jersey coming up in May. We are excited about traveling through the historic gardens of Jersey and England. Spots are going fast, so sign up soon!
