Hyacinthus orientalis In 1562 a new flowerbulb was discovered in the
Mediterranean areas, known as the French-Roman Hyacinth. While hyacinths are one
of the more known bulbs of the trade, it is the modern Dutch hybrids that the
gardening public is used too. To some this may mean larger and showier blooms,
but to others it's just an annual purchase of a bulb to be refrigerated and
thrown away soon after the bloom fades. With a fragrance often used for french
perfumes, you will find yourself clipping the inflorescence of flowers to
delight the inside of your house. One bulb will shoot up several flower stalks,
starting around the first of February and continuing for weeks ahead.
Wild Hyacinths are rare southern bulbs.
