Paperwhites for Forcing

One of the most common questions bulb growers receive is how to make a bulb bloom for a certain event. Timing bulbs to grow and bloom at the desired moment is called “forcing.” Some common forced bulbs are seen at specific holidays, including paperwhites and amaryllis for Christmas, Lilium longiflorum as Easter lilies, or tulips for Valentine’s Day.

Strong & Fragrant Paperwhites

Paperwhites are perhaps the easiest to force. Once you have selected your bulbs, find an appropriate pot for the bulb. Bulbs should be planted with their neck just above the soil. This is the stage where, as an artist, you can have a lot of fun, using rocks instead of soil, sallow pans, old pans, pots, etc. You can place the bulbs in a variety of containers. Water the bulbs after planting, and the flowers should be in full bloom 4-6 weeks later. This year we are excited to offer two new paperwhites that boast stronger stems and better fragrances!
