Narcissus pseudonarcissus Harsh conditions often deter other bulbs from blooming during the cold February months, but one brave daffodil is in a class all of its own. The traditional trumpet shaped Lent Lily (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), is the first narcissus to be called a "daffodil" and is believed to be the father of all modern trumpet varieties. Steeped in literary history, this father of trumpet shaped daffodils is reportedly the one Wordsworth so eloquently spoke of in his early poetry. In partial shade or full sun, this tough species daffodil mysteriously performs well with it's out of proportion short stature and large blooms. Gardeners do not mind though, as they welcome the slight fragrance and color during such a bleak winter time.
