I know they seem overdone, but when it comes to elephant ears, I can't help but to be especially in love with the upright forms of the Alocasia.  And for fun, I've included some of our pictures from 2007 of us growing these on the farm in Mineola, TX. Do you know the difference between Alocasia elephant ears and Colocasia elephant ears?  The Alocasia have upright leaves, like the tips are pointing to the sky, while Colocasia face downward, pointing to the ground.  The architectural difference is quite striking. So bring the tropics home with bold, architectural foliage!

Transform your landscape or indoor space with the dramatic presence of Alocasia macrorrhizos, an eye-catching tropical plant known for its massive, heart-shaped leaves that resemble elephant ears. Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, this striking aroid can reach towering heights of up to 15 feet in ideal outdoor conditions, making it a favorite for creating lush, exotic backdrops or bold focal points.

Features:

Impressive Size: Leaves can grow up to 3–6 feet long, supported by thick, upright stems.

Tropical Appeal: Adds instant jungle vibes to gardens, patios, or interior plant collections.

Versatile Growth: Thrives in containers, raised beds, or directly in the ground in warm climates (USDA Zones 9–11).

Low Maintenance: Prefers filtered sunlight and consistently moist, well-drained soil.

Care Tips:

Water regularly, especially during hot weather, but avoid soggy soil.

Provide bright, indirect light indoors or partial shade outdoors.

Protect from frost—move indoors or mulch heavily if temperatures drop below 50°F.

Whether you're landscaping a tropical paradise or making a bold indoor statement, Alocasia macrorrhizos delivers unparalleled impact with minimal fuss.
