Description
The Crinum moorei 'Album' is a great crinum for zones 8 - 10. At first glance, you might think that we made a mistake and really meant to put all this information under the Crinum x powellii 'Album,' but we didn't. The Crinum moorei 'Album' is one of the parents of the Crinum x powellii 'Album.' 'Album' in Latin means white so the bloom of the Crinum moorei is actually fully white with no hints of striping.
Planting: The Crinum moorei 'Album' needs to be planted in well-drained soil. Plant where the neck of the bulb is even with or just below the surface of the soil. If planting in the heat of the summer, consider adding a thin layer of mulch and then water them well for several weeks to help stimulate growth.
Sun: This beauty is different form most of crinum which like full, summer sun.
You can plant it where it can receive early morning sun. The afternoon southern sun is almost too harsh for this bulb so plant it where it can receive some shade during the hottest part of the day. It doesn't have to be full shade. Just a break from the full scorching sun.
OR
You can plant it where it will receive dappled sunlight all day long like near the edge of a large tree.
.
Water: This bulb will do well if left alone or unattended; however, if you want those beautiful blooms and it is a dry spring and early summer, be sure to irrigate. It takes a lot energy for the bulb to produce blooms, especially big beautiful blooms like these.
Blooms: The lush green foliage begins to appear in late winter/early spring, and then the beautiful white blooms make their appearance around May. The fragrant blooms on this crinum are elegant and exquisite. Each bulb produces a stalk over 3 feet tall which produces 5-7 blooms each. The blossoms are goblet-shaped and each one is 3-5". The color of the crinum moorei 'Album' is a rich deep pure white. These are excellent for leaving in your garden or cutting and bringing indoors.
Foliage: The foliage on the crinum moorei is a wide deep glossy green. During the heat of the summer, the Crinum moorei may die back until cooler weather appears and then begin to put on foliage anew. If the winter is mild, the foliage may stay for months. With lovely foliage and beautiful blooms, the crinum moorei 'Album' can be used as a centerpiece in your garden area. Because it prefers more shade than most summer bloomers, you can also use this bulb in locations to transform and revitalize dark or drab areas around your yard.
The winter provides an opportunity to plant other winter growing bulbs to hide the foliage and barren stalks of the crinum. Lycoris radiata, Narcissus tazetta 'Grand Primo', and other strong winter bulb foliage plants are good choices and allow you to pack in more color into more spaces. In the summer, skirt its base and garden borders with the complimentary pink rain lilies (Zephyranthes grandiflora) that bloom at the same time!
