I started off with only a few bulbs of Crinum 'Rose Parade' from celebrated breeder and grower of crinums, Marcelle Sheppard. It did not take long for them to start blooming, and they were the highlight of the entire summer on the farm. A MUST have for those who want striking summer color.
Blooms: The pink trumpet blooms are vibrant and large, and they show themselves often on two to three foot stalks throughout the summer, rising above a clump of long, strappy green leaves.
Planting: Plant in spring or summer once the danger of frost has passed. Set the bulb with the tip of its neck right at or barely above soil level. Crinums perform best with at least 8 hours of sun a day, though a little late-afternoon shade is welcome in the hottest areas. Give it well-drained soil and space bulbs about 3 feet apart so they have room to clump. Water regularly the first season while it gets established; after that it is quite drought tolerant. It is generally perennial in zones 7-10, and a layer of mulch over the bulb in winter helps in zone 7.
Landscaping Tip: Crinums don't like to be moved, so choose a permanent spot. A clump of 'Rose Parade' makes a cheerful summer show along a fence, by a mailbox, or at the back of a sunny border.
Animals: Like most crinums, deer and other animals tend to leave it alone.
