The terrestrial ground orchid (Bletilla striata) is also known as the Chinese ground orchid or hyacinth orchid. I am excited to have it in the inventory, because it satisfies one question I often receive: “Do you have any bulbs that do well in the shade?” My first response is yes, and I often talk about deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves in the winter) and that even though we might consider those spots shady in the summer, they actually provide quite a bit of winter sun—this winter sun is all that is needed for many spring blooming bulbs.

But what if you have limited light conditions in the winter as well. This bulb seems to do well in those conditions! It still needs some light to grow well and bloom, but not nearly as much as most bulbs. The striking purple flowers and gentle nature of this March to April blooming beauty make it a must have in your gardens!
